The pain had lived in her for three days before the light came, a pressure behind the eyes like a hand pressing down on a bruise. She had known such headaches since girlhood, the strange interior weather that came before or after the visions, as if the seeing cost the body something the body did not wish to pay. She was forty-two years old, an age at which a woman of her century had long since settled into whatever shape her life would keep. She had been enclosed behind the walls of the Disibodenberg for thirty-four of those years. She had buried Jutta von Sponheim, the anchoress who had raised her, five years before. She had taken up the government of the small community of women that had grown, almost without anyone intending it, around Jutta's cell, she was magistra now, though she wore the title the way she wore everything, without ceremony, a woman who did the next necessary thing because someone had to. And then, in the year 1141, kneeling or sitting, she never troubled herself to specify which, because the posture of the body seemed to her the least important detail of what happened next, the heavens opened. That is her own word for it.
