About this volume
This is the third volume in Turning the Wheel, and it steps back from the ground the first two books walked, the childhood, the years of quiet cultivation before 1992, the classes taught city by city across China, to ask a different kind of question. What, exactly, is being carried forward, book after book, movement after movement, year after year, in the practice that began at those tables and podiums? What the Wheel Carries is not a chronicle so much as an accounting of substance: the teaching itself, as it has settled into the lives of those who hold it, and as it continues, even now, to unfold.
The volume opens where so many practitioners' own accounts open, with the weight of Zhuan Falun in the hands, the strange density of a book that seems, from its first pages, to already know its reader. From there the chapters move inward, toward the concepts that give the practice its shape: the cosmic nature named by Zhen-Shan-Ren, karma understood not as sentence but as legible record, xinxing as the one dimension of a person that actually elevates, de as the quiet substance that accumulates through genuine goodness and is spent through its absence. These are treated here not as abstractions to be summarized but as lived categories, the vocabulary practitioners use to describe what is actually happening to them as they cultivate, day by day, in ordinary circumstances.
Two chapters reach further back and further out than biography usually goes. "Before History Began" and "Why This Fa, Why This Moment" take seriously the claims Master Li Hongzhi has made about the scope and timing of this teaching, not softening them, not translating them into safer metaphor, but presenting them as the practice itself understands them, so that a reader can meet the teaching's own account of itself honestly. This is a book written from inside the tradition's frame, and it trusts its reader enough not to hedge that frame with irony.
The middle chapters turn to the body and to community, the exercises and the stillness that make cultivation a physical discipline as much as a moral one, and then the wider fact of a practice that has, since the mid-1990s, spread far past its origins to be carried by people scattered across dozens of countries, in dozens of languages, often with no contact with one another beyond the same book on the same shelf. From there the volume turns, without flinching, to what practitioners inside China have endured since the persecution began in 1999, the arrests, the labor camps, the deaths, the decades of testimony smuggled out and spoken aloud, and to the plain fact of how many have simply continued, quietly, to practice.
The book closes by considering Master Li Hongzhi's ongoing role: a teacher who has not retreated into the past tense of biography but who continues, in exile, to write, to clarify, to address a movement still living and still growing. The final chapter turns the question back toward the reader directly, not as rhetorical flourish but as the honest terminus of everything the volume has traced. The wheel, as the practice describes it, does not stop turning. This book asks what it means to understand yourself as part of that turning, whether you come to these pages as a practitioner recognizing your own path described back to you, or as someone standing, for the first time, at the threshold Chapter 1 describes, deciding whether to pick up the book that started it all.
Readers already living inside Falun Dafa will find here a careful, respectful ordering of what they already carry in practice; readers coming from outside will find a volume unafraid to explain the teaching in its own terms, trusting that clarity, not persuasion, is the honest work of a book like this one.
