A candle gutters in a rented room just off Aldersgate Street, and a voice, not famous, not recorded, belonging to a man whose name history did not think to keep, is reading aloud from Martin Luther. It is Wednesday evening, the twenty-fourth of May, 1738, in London, and the hour is closing in on nine o'clock. A small society has gathered here as it gathers most evenings: plain people, tradesmen and their wives, meeting to sing a hymn or two, to pray, to hear something read that might feed a hungry soul through another ordinary week. Tonight the reading is Luther's preface to his commentary on the Epistle to the Romans. Among the dozen or so listeners sits a thirty-four-year-old Church of England priest, a Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, a former missionary to Georgia, a man who has fasted and prayed and visited prisons and rowed against every current of his own age toward holiness with more discipline than almost anyone alive. His name is John Wesley, and in a few minutes his heart is going to catch fire. He did not want to be in that room.
