The doors of the Metropolitan Tabernacle open at five, though the service will not begin until seven, and still there is a crowd on the pavement at Elephant and Castle before the gas lamps have properly caught the dusk. A costermonger who has washed the fish-smell from his hands as best he could. Two clerks from a counting-house on Cheapside, still in their collars. A widow from Camberwell who has not missed a Thursday evening in six years. They come on foot, by omnibus, by the new underground railway that rattles them up from the City, and by the time the doors swing wide there is already a queue three deep around the corner into Newington Butts. By half past six every pew on the ground floor is taken.
