The bell for Compline had not yet rung, though the light was already going out of the small infirmary window, when the sisters gathered close around the bed to watch her die. It was the evening of September 30, 1897, a Thursday, and the nun they had come to see was twenty-four years old. She weighed, by then, almost nothing. Her lungs had been failing her for a year and a half, filling with the slow drowning of tuberculosis, and for weeks she had told her sisters, quite plainly, that she would not see another October. Now the hour had come, and she looked, one of them would later say, not like a woman being defeated but like a woman being received. She had asked, some days before, that they not leave her alone at the end. Mother Agnes of Jesus, her own sister Pauline, who had once been a second mother to her in the house on the Rue Saint-Blaise, and who was now her prioress, knelt near enough to catch what breath was left in her.
