The banquet hall of the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles glittered on the evening of March 7, 1952, chandeliers throwing soft gold light over white tablecloths, over the dark suits of diplomats, over the saffron and cream of a few silk saris moving among them. The occasion was a dinner in honor of Binay R. Sen, India's ambassador to the United States, and the guest list read like a small atlas of two nations trying to understand each other: American officials, Indian consular staff, members of Los Angeles society, and, near the head table, a tall man in an ochre robe whose presence had, for thirty years, made rooms in this city feel larger than they were. Paramahansa Yogananda rose to speak. He was sixty-one years old, though photographs from that spring show a face still smooth, still lit from within, the famous eyes half-lidded as if perpetually gazing at something just behind the visible world. He had come to America in 1920 a young monk with almost no money and a single trunk, sent by his own Guru to carry the ancient science of Kriya Yoga across an ocean and a civilization.
