The first pages · The Sister Who Found Him Green

The path to Drakar Taso does not forgive the unprepared, and Peta was not prepared. She had climbed since before light, past the tree line where the wind stops pretending to be gentle, over scree that moved under her sandals like something alive and unwilling to hold her. She had brought a little barley flour tied in cloth, a bowl, and a small store of dread she had been carrying so long she no longer noticed its weight. She had not seen her brother in years. She had heard, from travelers who passed through the valley, that a man was living somewhere above White Rock Horse Tooth on nothing at all, that he had not been seen at any village hearth, that no one could say whether he was alive. She climbed expecting to bury him. What she found at the mouth of the cave stopped her on the ledge with her hand still on the rock. There was a shape inside, low and still against the stone, the color of pond scum, the color of something that has been underwater too long.

Questions, answered

What is the free book, and is there a catch?

No catch. The Invitation is a real book, free, and yours to keep: a complete portrait of this life in about 20,000 words, not a sample or a teaser. It is the doorway. The three volumes tell the life in its fullness, and they are here whenever you wish to go deeper.

How do I read it? Do I need an account?

Enter your email and we send a single sign-in link, and no password to invent. Your library opens in your browser, holding the book, and your reading place is always kept across your devices.

Can I listen as well as read?

Yes. Every life is available in both ebook and audiobook, read and listened to natively in your library. The free Invitation includes its narration too.

What does it cost?

The free Invitation costs nothing, and always will. Own any title for $8 (ebook and audiobook together) or a Complete Life for $20. The Library Card ($369, once, yours for life) opens every life in the house, every volume and every audiobook, and each new life joins the day it is finished. Every life, every volume, every voice - and every one still to come. One payment, yours for life.

Can I cancel?

Any time, in one click, from your library. You keep everything to the end of the period you have paid for, and we never ask why.

What if I would rather own a copy?

Every life is sold in print and ebook through the ordinary bookshops: Ingram, Google Play, Apple Books, Kobo. The membership is how to read the whole house; the shops are how to keep one life on your shelf forever.
