The street outside Nirmal Hriday smelled of diesel exhaust and marigolds sold for temple offerings, and underneath both, if the wind was still, the smell of the market's rotting vegetable heaps two lanes over. It was the smell Calcutta wore most days in the 1950s, when the city still bore the scars of Partition and the pavements filled each night with people who had nowhere else to be. A small woman in a white sari edged with three blue stripes walked that street the way she walked every street in that quarter of the city, slowly, eyes down, looking for what everyone else had trained themselves not to see. She found him against a wall near the fish market, half in the gutter where the monsoon runoff had carried him. He was an old man, though it was hard to tell his age; hunger and disease had worn the years off him strangely, aging his skin while wasting his frame down to something like a child's. Ants had found the wounds on his back.
